"The Avengers" hit Comic-Con...
By now, everything I'm about to say will have been reported a million times over all around the world. I could care less, because I am infinity excited about everything coming our way from Marvel in the cinema - more specifically, "The Avengers" film. With Joss Whedon (of "Buffy"/"Angel"/"Firefly"/"Serenity"/"Dollhouse" fame) taking the directors role; this film is going to bring together all of the Marvel superheroes in one beautifully glorious action epic...
At the Marvel panel in Hall H of the San Diego Comic-Con, things started off with talk of the up-coming "The First Avenger: Captain America" film. The first trailer for it was shown with lots of WWII footage, punctuated with brief shots of Chris Evans in full Captain America attire, throwing his shield. I am dying to see this - even if it's only brief shots of Chris Evans - so hopefully this will make the virals soon enough. Hugo Weaving was also on stage talking about how he's basing his Red Skull voice on Werner Herzog and Klaus Maria Brandauer (interesting to say the least); and the film's director Joe Johnston says that much of the inspiration for the movie will come from him being a fan of the Ed Brubaker-written Captain.
Following the Captain America segment, Kenneth Branaugh appeared on stage for his first Comic-Con appearance, to introduce his vision of the "Thor" movie that heads our way soon. On stage with him were some of the cast; the man who will play Thor Chris Hemsworth, and also Natalie Portman. Again some footage is shown, which is in 3D, and it includes Thor being cast out of Asgard, fighting lots of federal agents and meeting a mighty enemy in the form of Destroyer. This is the first proper chance that Marvel can try and introduce magic into the mix of the superhero films, and I feel Branaugh might be the man to do it. Earlier at the Comic-Con, Thor's helmets were displayed in a trophy case, with a lot of interest and keen fans pushing to see them in real life.
After that, a few questions including one about Edward Norton's departure as the Hulk; and then Kevin Feige also revealed that Marvel intend to do something else with Frank Castle (a.k.a "The Punisher") as soon as they have time to get to it...
Then - came the big event, and boy was it big! A 'trailer' of film which basically consisted of Samuel L. Jackson doing a voiceover, while the screen showed the unveiling of "The Avengers" logo was played; with Samuel L. Jackson ('Nick Fury') appearing himself on stage afterwards. Scarlett Johansson 'Black Widow'), Chris Hemsworth ('Thor'), Chris Evans ('Captain America'), and Robert Downey Jr. ('Iron Man') then all appear on stage. Nearly all of The Avengers are there right now. Next Jeremy Renner enters the stage with the announcement that he will be playing Hawkeye in the film. Then the official unveiling of the new Bruce Banner a.k.a The Incredible Hulk - and he comes in the form of Mark Ruffalo. Finally Joss Whedon comes on stage, with the director completing the line-up of "The Avengers". Joss is then quoted as saying:
A few press-shots, and it's done - the entire cast is announced, locked-down and set...and "The Avengers" will indeed be a film that I queue up for weeks before it's release! Below are a couple of pictures from the San Diego Comic-Con for you...
Well that's everything. I hope that lots of you are as excited as I am to see the result of this incredible group of actors work together, and that you enjoyed reading this round-up of just what happened. Special thanks go to SFX Magazine on Twitter for the step-by-step updates of just what was going on, which enabled me to write this round-up. I'll be back soon with the August cinema release schedule for the UK. Flix Out.
