The Bank Job (2008)
The Bank Job (2008)
The true story of a heist gone wrong... in all the right ways.
Starring: Jason Statham, Saffron Burrows
Director: Roger Donaldson
Running Time: 110 Minutes
MPAA Rating: R
Action, Crime, Drama
The Bank Job is an action and crime drama set around the real 1971 Baker Street robbery in central London. This crime caper flick turns into a political thriller part way though and includes intrigue, sex and racial tensions of 1970’s England.
Terry Leather, played by Jason Statham, is a shady London car dealer. He gets convinced to rob a bank with the help of his friends, after an old female acquaintance, Martine, (Saffron Burrows) lures him into her plot.
On the surface it seems simple enough. The bank’s security system is off, and all the would-be-robbers need to do is tunnel into the bank from under a neighboring store, come up though the floor and clean out the safety deposit boxes. However, Terry doesn’t realize Martine’s true intention is to recover a safety deposit box containing photos of a member of the royal family in a compromising situation. While the actual heist goes off without any major problems, that is where their plan ends and the problems begin.
Leather (Statham) and his crew of armatures not only stole the photos of a certain member of royalty, they also lifted pictures and documents of government officials and a pornographer. These documents detail scandal and high level corruption within the police department and other agencies. All are willing to kill to recover their property to insure that the explicit behaviors are not exposed.
Terry Leather, (Jason Statham) turns in the performance that many of his fans have been waiting for. His normally intense physical action has been replaced with forceful and sometimes emotional dialogue. While his acting will not win him an Oscar, is it a huge step forward from the roles he is known for. The best example of Statham’s range culminates during a scene where his character’s wife confronts his about what he has been doing and his true relationship with Martine (Burrows). The back and forth argument is as believable as any fight between a married couple.
If you’re a fan of either Jason Statham or crime dramas you can’t go wrong with The Bank Job. It’s a popcorn movie that you can sit down and watch without having to pay attention to every line that is spoken. The action is intense at times and you may find yourself wincing once or twice at the lengths characters will go to in order to get what they want.
